Baroque art did not ask merely to be seen.
It entered the body.
Light struck through darkness. Marble appeared to soften beneath the pressure of flesh. Painted ceilings opened into skies that architecture could no longer contain. Saints fainted, bodies twisted, fabrics moved as though touched by wind, and faces were caught at the instant when conviction became ecstasy, terror, grief or revelation.
